“Striking, deep, vivid purple-crimson; the perfumed red berry bouquet heralds a harmonious, supple palate with both depth and length to the black and red cherry fruit; the oak is not obtrusive, tannins present but not obvious. To 2027.”

James Halliday 95 Points

“Strong, bright crimson-purple hue; a very expressive bouquet with a deep pinot and allspice aroma is replayed on the full, but well balanced palate, plum, spice and positive oak all contributing. Sure to develop well. To 2023.”

James Halliday 94 Points (Silver)

2014
Vintage 2014 was a challenging season, being cool and high rainfall during flowering . As a result, quality and yields were down, across the Yarra Valley. The decision was taken early: to forgo the – albeit small quantity – so as not to compromise quality production of Nine One Six Pinot Noir.

“This is pinot noir to make your head spin. Cranberry, musk, sour cherry, sweet herbs, tang and silk. It offers some kind of journey and impresses as some kind of wonderful. If you get the chance you must try this. It’s captivating…”

Campbell Mattison, Halliday 96 Points (Gold)

How does Nine One Six #pinotnoir from #yarravalley #australia stand up to #japanese #donburi with an array of #homemade pickles? Very well! Loved the wine’s subtle flavors, floral notes & sweet spices #wine tasting #australianwine #masterofwine #winelove @JeannieChoLee, MW, Twitter 24th July, 2019

Cherry-berry flavours with layers of rose petals, undergrowth and fragrant herbs. Drinking it is like taking a walk in the garden. Fresh, lively, different, individual. Light in both colour and flavour but harmonious and intriguing.

“The immediate balance and sense of effortlessness, coupled with complexity and vibrant detail, called for an early bottling to preserve the youthful exuberance of these wines, opting for slow bottle-ageing to lay on the charms of maturity instead”

2019

Vineyard

Low rainfall and mild temperatures from budburst through to December. A hot and hurry up end to the vintage with a compressed harvest window across the Yarra Valley!

Harvest

Hand picked from only nine middle rows in south, five middle rows in west on 28th February, 2019.

Winery

Both whole bunch and destemmed berries ferment. In neutral barrique barrels on gross-lees for 12 months. Bottled under Diam cork July 2020. 12.5% alc/vol. Release date 11th October 2021.

Wine Purchase

“… Heady with florals, a touch of star anise, fennel and blood orange with a waft of forest floor. Sweet plums and cherries mingle and linger. Don’t be fooled by its apparent gentleness and lightness across the palate, as the fine tannins and bright acidity lengthen out the finish. A lovely wine..”

2020
Vintage 2020 seemed like fun at the time, but as we know now, the pandemic hit, and life changed as we knew it. We kept some of the harvest to produce a sparkling pinot noir; to sense the vineyard in a different way. It will be ready to release soon.
2021

Vintage 2021 was wonderful, our best yet.

Perfect conditions for fruit set, rain when we needed it, and no heatwaves. Harvest was an absolute delight.

The wine is now still in barrel.

We’re not in the business of hurrying things.

It will likely be bottled in 2022, and we’ll lay it down in a temperature controlled cellar before release in 2023.
