pinot noir of site and season, naturally

from a small pinot noir only vineyard in the Yarra Valley

"...natural wine at its greatest" James Halliday, Wine Companion

  • place

The soils are a distillation of the landscape and all who’ve lived here; from the earliest indigenous owners, farmers, alluvial and shallow shaft miners, loners, battlers, families, academics, artists, vignerons, winemakers.

  • vineyard and wine

Now we are growing grapes - pinot noir only -  which are carefully made into wine to truly represent the seasons of each vintage. The winemaking intent is as pure and simple as possible: to create expressive wine with longevity.

  • intent

It’s a considered approach. The thirty year old vines draw from deep foundations. In a particularly low intervention way, we’re striving for balance: at this place, in the vineyard, in the winery, and to your glass.

2021 - current release - one barrel, wax seal

Perfect conditions for fruit set, rain when we needed it, and no heatwaves. Harvest was an absolute delight.

We've selected one special barrel for release. From start to finish, all by hand: picked, pressed, bottled. Released August 2023.

2019 "...heady with florals, a touch of star anise, fennel and blood orange..."

Low rainfall and mild temperatures from budburst through to ripening and then a hot and hurry up end to the vintage with a compressed harvest window across the Yarra Valley! Handpicked from only nine middle rows in south, five middle rows in west on 28th February, 2019.

Both whole bunch and destemmed berries ferment, in neutral barriques on fross-lees for 12 months. Bottled under Diam cork July 2020. 12.5% alc/vol. Release date 11th October 2021.

2018 "...layered complexity across the Indian spice-infused bunch element..."

Sporadic rain and shine during spring gave way to a long, dry summer and ideal ripening period. Harvest south hand picked from only four middle rows, and west hand picked three middle rows both on 8th March.

South and west fruit kept separated. Whole bunches, natural ferments. Footstomped! Bottled under Diam cork November 2018. Both wines 13% alc/vol. Release date 8th August 2020.

2017 "... everything a pinot should be..." 95 points

“Everything a pinot should be: fragrant, finely-tuned and elegant. Add to that florals, spiced cherries, orange peel and a hint of menthol before swaying onto its medium- bodied palate, buoyant with supple tannins and fresh acidity. To 2030.” 95 Points, Halliday Wine Companion

Luscious spring rain, mild flowering conditions, gentle ripening: an outstanding vintage. Harvest handpicked from only six middle rows in south, six middle rows in west on 5th March 2017.

Whole bunches into small fermenters, just a few rows desetmmed. Natural ferment. Handplunged. Bottles under Diam cork November 2018. 12.5%alc/vol. Release date 9th December 2019.

2016 "...impresses as some kind of wonderful...captivating" 96 Points

“Meaty and wild. This is pinot noir to make your head spin. Cranberry, musk, sour cherry, sweet herbs, tang and silk. It offers some kind of journey and impresses as some kind of wonderful. If you get the chance you must try this. It’s captivating.” 96 Points, Halliday Wine Companion
